Had I been born a lab rat, my life would have served but one purpose. In this life however, I have been lucky enough to be human and female. As women it seems we are expected to be naturally creative. I remember in my teens and 20's that idea for me was limited to what I might compose from otherwise boring materials, or art. Often I would compare my work to that of others and ended up feeling insignificant rather than appreciative of the gains I had made in my personal creativity.
Twenty years later, looking through more seasoned and compassionate lenses, I see clearly a life well lived is art unto itself. And my favorite part of this living process has been reinventing myself in ways I hadn't previously dreamed possible. I have never settled on any idea of what to be when I grow up. As a result, I have done many things including but not limited to designing handbags, opened a skin care studio, managed an office full of options traders and stock clerks, organized events, worked in public relations for a well known bank, waited on tables, stayed at home with the children, and recently organized an estate sale.
I have a feeling it won't be the last. Estate Sale, that is. I didn't do it alone of course. I had a ton of help and we hired a consultant who has been in estate liquidation for decades. I really had a blast. Being in an environment full of antiques and history, talking to people, negotiating and doing sales, all at the same time is like having my cake and eating it too. These photos were a few of my favorite things.
Have you ever surprised yourself with a newly discovered skill or talent? What did you learn and were any challenges involved? I love hearing stories from other women. And womens' stories is an area I'll be visiting often soon.
